The principles upon which the Helios SpaceStation works as a permanent settlement in space is largely due to its shape and rotation.
Spherical space stations that orbit and rotate can attract their own atmosphere which then adds to the strength of the hull of the craft from inbound objects and rays.
Rotation also increases the relative gravity within the craft with the ability to generate normal gravity at the centre of the craft.
Human beings require strong periods of normal gravity in order to function, particularly at periods of sleep.
